October 5 - Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang sparked havoc at the shooting range today as they won the 10m air rifle pairs to secure the host nation’s first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games.

The defending champions scored 1,193 points to beat the previous record they set at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games four years ago and ignite a furious media scrum made up largely of Indian reporters.

The fuss centered mostly on Bindra - current world and Olympic champion in the 10m air rifle and poster boy of these Games - and upset a number of coaches from other nations as some athletes were still shooting while the Indian pair were loudly bombarded by the press.

The crazy scenes, though, were no reflection at all on Bindra and Narang who were superb throughout the event.

The 28-year-old Bindra contributed 595 points, which included two perfect rounds of 100, while his 27-year-old partner Narang - current world record holder in the event with a mark of 600 - did even better with four 100s and two 99s in his 598.

England’s James Huckle and Kenny Parr won silver with 1,174 points with Bangladesh third on 1,173.

From the middle of the intense media scrum, Bindra exclaimed: "This is my best moment since winning the gold in Beijing.

"It is always special to win a medal for the country and this is the first time I am competing in such a big event on Indian soil.

"I am happy with the way we performed and hope to continue our showing in the coming days."

Anisa Syyed and Rahee Sarnobat soon followed their compatriots by winning India’s second gold in the women’s 25m pistol pairs as they set a new Games record of 1,156.

They finished ahead of Australian silver medallists Lalita Yauhleuskaya and Linda Ryan on 1,146 points and England’s Julia Lyndall and Gorgs Geikie who shot a total of 1,122 to secure the bronze.
