Top seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand progressed to the quarter-final stage of the men’s event at the Badminton World Federation Spain Masters in Barcelona.

A strong performance saw Avihingsanon emerge as a 21-19, 21-16 winner against France’s Thomas Rouxel at the Pavelló de la Vall d'Hebron.

Second seed Rasmus Gemke of Denmark ended the challenge of home hope Luis Enrique Penalver with a 21-7, 21-16 victory.

Gemke’s compatriot Jan O Jorgensen, bronze medallist at the 2015 World Championships, also progressed to the quarter-finals as he edged Japan’s Riichi Takeshita 21-16, 18-21, 23-21.

Israel’s Misha Zilberman triumphed in three games against Denmark’s Rasmus Messerschmidt by a 19-21, 21-17, 21-16 score.

England’s Toby Penty also progressed in the same manner as he beat Finland’s Henri Aarnio 21-12, 17-21, 21-15.

Beatriz Corrales reached the quarter-finals in the women’s singles draw, with the Spaniard impressing in front of a home crowd.

She triumphed 21-15, 21-14 against Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri.

Japan's second seed Sayaka Takahashi also reached the last eight of the Super 300 World Tour event.

Takahashi was a 21-4, 21-10 winner against Denmark’s Michelle Skodstrup.

Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt also advanced as she clinched a 21-17, 21-14 win over Canada’s Brittney Tam.
