Hosts Serbia suffered defeat on the opening day of the World Women's Youth Water Polo Championships in Belgrade.

The home team were looking to make a strong start at the Milan Gale Muskatirovic Sports Centre, but they came up against an impressive Spanish side.

Spain would storm into a strong lead and ultimately celebrated a 26-4 success in their first Group A tie.

There was a close battle between Canada and Italy in the second Group A match, with the latter edging their rivals 15-13.

Australia started well in Group B as their team emerged as 18-5 winners against Uzbekistan, while Greece were 18-6 victors against Brazil.

The Greek team will hope to replicate the achievement of their men’s team, who earned the world junior title earlier this month.

Group C began will convincing wins for the United States and Hungary.

The US brushed aside the challenge of Kazakhstan, as they secured a 26-2 victory to move top of the standings.

Hungary were 20-5 winners against Argentina in their first fixture.

Group D matches rounded off the day, with defending champions Russia beating New Zealand 15-11.

The Netherlands then thrashed South Africa 18-3.
