Ondrej Moravec gave his Czech fans a perfect present by taking the final gold medal at the Summer Biathlon World Championships as he completed a home double in Nove Mesto na Moravě.

Moravec confidently won the men’s pursuit with just a single penalty in 33min 52.9sec.

Silver went to fellow Czech athlete Michal Krcmar, the previous day’s sprint gold medallist, who had two penalties and finished 33.7sec back.

Ukraine’s Artem Pryma came third with two misses as he crossed the line 43 seconds behind.

The triumph rounded off a dominant day for the Czech Republic following the earlier victory of compatriot Veronika Vítková.

Vítková, who had missed a podium place in the women’s sprint by a single place, won with two penalties in 31:25.8, although she admitted the nerves had got to her on a day when the arena was packed with 9,000 spectators.

“It was hard because being at home, with so many people here, it’s a big pressure,” she said.

“But after yesterday’s fourth place, I wanted a medal and now I am here!

“At the last shooting, I was very nervous, after four shots, my legs were shaking, but I managed to win and this is a great feeling.”
