Kazakhstan beat Argentina to progress to the semi-finals in Almaty ©WUC2018

Hosts Kazakhstan thrashed Argentina to reach the semi-finals of the men's tournament at the World University Futsal Championships in Almaty.

Kazakhstan were in fine form in the quarter-final clash as they recorded a comfortable 6-2 win over their Argentinian opponents at the Almaty Arena.

The victory for the host nation set up a meeting with Portugal in the last four.

Portugal also produced a dominant display as they beat Thailand 7-2 in their quarter-final encounter.

In the other half of the draw, Russia stormed into the semi-finals following a 6-1 demolition of the Czech Republic.

Russia will take on Ukraine, who narrowly overcame Poland 5-3 today, for a place in the final.


The women's group stage came to a close today, with Russia sealing the last available semi-final berth after they beat Canada 3-1.

The result saw Russia progress from Group A behind Ukraine.

Portugal and France had already guaranteed a place in the last four prior to the last set of group matches.

Russia will play Group B winners Portugal, while Ukraine take on France.

Semi-finals in both the men's and women's tournaments are due to be held when the tournament resumes tomorrow.
