Hosts Panama maintained their strong challenge for the Under-15 Baseball World Cup as they earned a surprise win over Japan on a day when an earthquake struck the region.

A quake of a magnitude of 6.0 was recorded in southern Costa Rica near the border with Panama on Friday evening, knocking out power in places but there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

Panama are now tied for first place with the United States as both head for the final day of the super round in the World Baseball and Softball Confederation event.

Carlos Gonzalez’s grand slam in the first inning - minutes after an earthquake had been felt - helped push the hosts past a team ranked 12 places above them at number two with a 7-3 win.

The United States maintained their challenge for the trophy by beating defending champions Cuba 10-0, with Cody Schrier startng things off in the best way with a solo home run.

Panama will now face the Dominican Republic, 4-3 winners over Chinese Taipei today, in the final set of super round matches, while the United States meet Japan.
