Local rider Frank Schuttert has pulled off a surprise win on home soil to take the Valkenswaard leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour at the Tops International Arena.

The 24-year-old said he was “speechless” at his victory, which was his first on the tour and seals him a place in the Champions Tour Play off in Prague.

“I was waiting for this moment and in front of a Dutch crowd it is amazing, fantastic and a dream come true,” he said.

“It is amazing, I never expected it.

“I am not in a global team, but maybe after today next year it would be nice!”

In what was the closest meeting of the tour so far, first and second place were separated by just one hundredth of a second.

The result does not knock Ben Maher from Great Britain off the top of the overall standings, but in failing to pick up extra points in Valkenswaard his rivals have edged closer.

Thirty-four jumpers started at the Tops International Arena with many looking for crucial points in the rankings, though it was a disappointing day for Pieter Devos from Belgium, Edwina Tops-Alexander from Australia and Jur Vrieling from the home nation, who each picked up eight faults.

Scott Brash meanwhile, who won last time out in London, also suffered a number of faults, meaning he has not moved above sixth in the overall rankings.

A finishing time of 38.11secs was enough to take the win for Schuttert.

The tour will now continue in Rome from September 6 to 9.
