They won their Group B clash with The Netherlands 5-1 at the Estadio Rico Cedeño in Chitré.

Brander Guevara Valdes was superb from the pitcher's mound, earning nine strikeouts to restrict the European side.

Elsewhere in Group B, Japan edged past Australia 4-2 to open with a victory.

Dominican Republic beat South Africa 5-3 on a day when every side from the Americas began with a win.

That included hosts Panama who thrashed Chinese Taipei 9-1 as Group A games were played at Estadio Kenny Serracín in David.

The United States powered to a thumping 27-0 victory over China and Brazil raced past Brazil 10-0.

The US, the world's top ranked nation, are seeking a sixth tournament win but a first since 2011.

Players taking part at the male tournament are all aged between 13 and 15.
