Malaysia have targeted a poomsae taekwondo medal at the Asian Games when the discipline makes its debut at the event this month.

Poomsae will join the sparring disciplines in being featured at the Games, which are being co-hosted this year in Indonesian cities Jakarta and Palembang.

It will be a tough examination for competitors as recognised poomsae, freestyle and new poomsae will all be utilisted during the same event.

Competition will take place in Jakarta's JCC Plenary Hall between August 19 and 23.

"For the individual events, we are required to use recognised poomsae until the quarter finals and then a combination of new poomsae and recognised poomsae for the semi-finals and final," said Malaysia's poomsae coach Yap Yih Tiing to the New Straits Times.

"The team event will be the same until the quarter finals but will then require a combination of new poomsae and freestyle from the semi-finals onwards.

"I believe our preparations are going well so far.

"We will remain in Malaysia for our final phase of training until the Games and will be training together with a Korean champion (Jin Jun Beom).

"Our target is to at least win one bronze in Indonesia."

Chew Wei Yan, a Southeast Asian Games champion and the Korean Open winner, is among Malaysia's best medal hopes.

Women's prospect Yap Khim Wen is an injury doubt, however, due to ankle and knee problems.
