Eight teams from seven different countries won their final round qualifying matches in the women's competition today at the Beach Volleyball Vienna Major.

Six of the top eight seeded teams made it through to the main draw at the Donauinsel Arena at the third of four Beach Major Series events on this season's World Tour Calendar.

It is also the final qualifying tournament for the World Tour Finals.

The biggest breakthrough win came from the Russian Olympians Ekaterina Birlova and Evgeniya Ukolova, who beat the third seeds of Azusa Futami and Akiko Hasegawa from Japan, 17-21, 21-16, 22-20 in 55 minutes to make it through in Austria's capital.

"We just arrived from Morocco and it wasn't easy to play two games in the same day with such high temperatures," said Birlova after the match.

"We qualified, but we're not very happy about the quality of our game.

"We will focus on it and try to improve in the main draw."

Also making it through were the Spanish team of Angela Lobato and Amaranta Navarro.

The 11th seeds beat the sixth seeds of Ana Gallay and Fernanda Pereyra from Argentina 21-18, 21-19 in 38 minutes.

Neither of those teams were the first to make it through, however.

That accolade went to Kelley Larsen and Emily Stockman from the United States.

The top seeds beat the French team of Aline Chamerau and Alexandra Jupiter, 21-14, 21-18.

They finished fourth and fifth in the last two World Tour events in Switzerland and China.

Another American pair also made it through.

The ninth seeds of Lauren Fendrick and Sarah Sponcil beat the team seeded one place above them, Valentvna Davidova and Ievgeniia Shchvokova from Ukraine, 21-16, 21-16.

The other teams to qualify were the second seeds Taru Lahti and Anniia Parkkinen from Finland, the fourth seeds Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka from Latvia, the Slovakians Natalia Dubovcova and Andrea Strbova, who were seeded fifth, and the seventh seeds Jamie Broder and Taylor Pischke from Canada.

While the women's main fraw will start tomorrow, the men’s qualifying rounds have not yet finished.

The final matches to decide which men's pairs make it through to the main event will take place tomorrow morning.
