October 4 – Nigerian teenager Augustina Nkem Waikoloa (pictured) has made history by becoming the first athlete to win gold at this year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi with victory in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.

India had been hoping their own Soniya Chanu would become the country’s new hero as she went into the event favourite, having won the 2009 Commonwealth Championship in Malaysia.

There were also big hopes for Sandhya Ravi Devi Atom, another Indian athlete predicted to reach the podium in the women’s 48kg event.

However, both were eclipsed by the 18-year-old Nigerian who broke the Commonwealth Games record on route to victory with a spectacular total of 175.0 points.

There was some consolation for India though as Chanu and Atom saw the country claim their first medals of the event.

Atom took silver with a points total of 167.0 while Atom joined her teammate on the podium by picking up bronze with a total of 165.0.
