The Canoe Sprint Junior and Under-23 World Championships began in Plovdiv today with 76 races going ahead ©ICF

A total of 76 races took place today on day one of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Sprint Junior and Under-23 World Championships in Plovdiv in Bulgaria.

Heats began in a whopping 22 different competitions, including the junior women's C1 500 metres which started first at 8.30am and the junior women's C2 200m which brought an end to the day at 5.40pm.

The fastest qualifier in the junior girls' C1 500m was Canada's Sophia Jensen, who won her heat in 2min 6sec.

The next fastest to make it through was China's Yajue Zhang, who won the first heat in 2:11:375.

In the junior boys' K1 1,000m the fastest to qualify was Bulgaria's own Anton Novak, who won the fifth and final heat in 3:38:184.

The next fastest time in that event came in the third heat, which was won by Denmark’s Rasmus Bradstrup Knudsen in 3:38:204.

The fastest time in the girls' K1 1,000m came in heat two from Belarus' Alina Neumiarzhytskaya, who finished in 4:04:923.

The K1 women's 1,000m was the first event of the day among the under-23 athletes too.

The fastest time from the under-23 event came from Germany's Jule Marie Hake, who won the first heat in 4:01:929.

The most impressive athlete in the under-23 men's C1 200m event was Vadim Korobov, who won the first heat in 40.289.

Tomorrow will see the first medals of the championships decided, in events including the junior boys' K1 1,000m and junior girls' K1 1,000m.
