Quarter-finals of handball and table tennis were among the highlights as the European Universities Games in Coimbra continued.

At the Mario Mexia venue, the University of Bochum claimed a 33-24 win over Radboud University Nijmegen in the men’s handball quarter-finals.

There was also a narrow 27-25 victory for the University of Barcelona over their counterparts from Belgrade, while Aix-Maretille University earned a 28-23 success against the University of Minho of Portugal.

Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava from Romania face the University of Oslo for the final quarter-final spot.

In the women’s quarter-finals, Radboud University Nijmegen bettered the achievement of their men’s team by winning 36-25 against the University of Pitesti.

The University of Belgrade won 29-26 against the University of Applied Sciences for Police and Public Administration from Germany.

Aix-Maretille University claimed a 29-23 success in their match with the Lithuanian Sports University.

The last quarter-final sees the University of Rijeka take on the German Sport University Cologne.

In women’s singles table tennis Roksana Zalomska won an all-Polish quarter-final 3-2 against Katarzyna Nowocin, while France’s Qiwen Ziao beat Britain’s Yolanda King.

Russia’s Anna Blazhko achieved the same score against Portgual’s Raquel Viera Andrade, with another all Polish clash seeing Klaudia Kusinska overcome Katarzyna Slifirczyk 3-2.

All four of the men’s quarter-finals ended 3-0, with Poland’s Mateusz Golebioswki overcoming Britain’s Marcus Giles, but his compatriot Lukasz Nadolski lost to Turkey’s Ibrahim Gunduz.

The Czech Republic’s Ondrej Bajger and Turkey’s Abdullah Talha Yigenler saw off competition from Turkey’s Ziver Gündüz and Portugal’s Joao Daniel Loureiro Neves in their matches.
