France have won three gold medals on the opening day of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom Under-23 and Junior World Championships in Ivrea in Italy.

A total of eight team golds were up for grabs, with the Czech Republic picking up two, and one gold medal going to each of Germany, Slovakia and Spain.

In a great story of personal triumph, Mathurin Madore came back from a broken elbow sustained late last year to help Malo Quemeneur and Clement Travert win the gold medal for France in the men's under-23 K1 team event.

"I had to stop paddling for four months, and then only just got back in time for the national selection event," Madore said.

"It's quite hard, especially in the head, to come back.

"But now you can see, everyone can come back."

Prior to that victory, France had already taken the win in the men's junior C1 team event, with Nicolas Gestin, Jules Bernardet and Alexis Bobon finishing ahead of the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Afterwards, Gestlin revealed a training camp in Ivrea in May helped them to their win.

The third French gold medal came in the final event of the day, the men’s junior K1 team race.

Julien Pajaud, Vincent Delahaye and Anatole Delassus finished ahead of teams from the Czech Republic and Germany.

Reigning junior K1 world champion Antonie Galuskova helped the Czechs win the women's K1 team event, while Gabriela Satkova, Tereza Kneblova and Eva Rihova finished ahead of Great Britain and France in the women's C1 junior teams final to win the Czechs' other gold.

Germany's gold came in the first final of the day, in the men's under-23 C1 team final, while Spain's triumph came in the equivalent women’s event.

Slovakia's victory was seized by Eliska Mintalova, Michaela Hassova and Lucia Murzova in the women's under-23 team event.

Tomorrow's racing is due o begin with the men's under-23 C1 event.
