Turkey's Nisantasi University claimed the first gold medal of the 2018 European Universities Games after beating Poland's Rzeszow University of Technology in the men's team table tennis final in Coimbra.

Nisantasi prevailed 3-1 at the Jorge Anjinho venue in the Portuguese city.

Ibrahim Gündüz set them on their way to success with a 9-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 win over Łukasz Nadolski before Abdullah Talha Yigenler doubled their advantage by defeating Mateusz Gołębiowski 11-8, 11-7, 15-13. 

Piotr Cyrnek pulled Rzeszow back into the contest by overcoming Ziver Gündüz 11-6, 11-7, 7-11, 12-14, 11-4 but Nisantasi's triumph was sealed when Ibrahim Gündüz beat Gołębiowski 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 11-4.

Beaten semi-finalists Vytautas Magnus University of Lithuania and University of Gothenburg of Sweden, who lost 3-0 to Rzeszow and Nisantasi respectively, were the bronze medallists. 

The women's team table tennis final saw Russia's Kazan Innovative University edge Poland's University of Warsaw 3-2.

Kazan twice came from behind to draw level before Ekaterina Guseva defeated Bingran Ren 11-9, 11-7, 11-4 in the decider.

Katarzyna Ślifirczyk gave Warsaw the lead with a 12-10, 11-6, 12-10 win over Guseva, but it was cancelled out by Anna Blazhko's 11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 11-5 victory at the expense of Ren.

Katarzyna Nowocin restored Warsaw's advantage by overcoming Diana Ivanova 11-9, 11-7, 10-12, 11-8 before Blazhko forced the contest to a fifth and final match with an 11-9, 11-3, 11-7 triumph over Ślifirczyk.

The semi-finals saw Warsaw and Kazan register 3-0 wins over France's University of Paris 13 and Poland's Jan Dlugosz University respectively.

The Opening Ceremony of the 2018 European Universities Games took place this evening at University Palace.
