Four European pairs moved into the men’s main draw at the Beach Volleyball Under-19 World Championship following victories in the third round of the qualification tournament in Nanjing today. 

Hungary’s Artúr Hajós and Bence Attila Stréli deservedly progressed to the main draw after coming through three matches at the Chinese city’s Tangshan International Beach Sports park.

They started the day by beating the United States' Jason Gibbs and Jacob Titus 15-21, 21-15, 15-8 before defeating Iran’s Sajad Heidari Sirmandi and Sina Shokati Shekarsaraei 21-18, 21-7 and then the Czech Republic’s Vit Beneš and Tomas Maixner 21-16, 19-21, 15-12.

Russia’s Denis Shekunov and Dmitrii Veretiuk played solidly in the qualification round with two victories.

The duo started with a 21-10, 21-11 win over Ecuador’s Dany Jair Leon Nieves and Joffre Rodolfo Jurado Carrillo and ensured their qualification with a 21-13, 21-18 triumph against Latvia’s Janis Jansons and Roberts Klavins.

The other double-match winners were Germany’s Rudy Schneider and Simon Pfretzschner, and Italy’s Alberto Di Silvestre and Tobia Marchetto.

Schneider and Pfretzschner beat Turkey’s Yusuf Ozdemir and Ali Cebeci 25-23, 21-15 and Ukraine’s Vladyslav Pavliuk and Ihor Sviridov 21-19, 21-16.

Di Silvestre and Marchetto, meanwhile, routed Israel’s Tomer Hadar and Eylon Elazar 21-10, 21-18 and The Netherlands’ Yorick de Groot and Rik Damen 22-20, 21-19.

In the women’s event, the Spanish pairings of Aina Munar Galmés and Sofía González Racero, and Daniela Álvarez Mendoza and Tania Moreno Matveeva advanced to the main draw.

Munar Galmés and González Racero opened the women’s qualification matches with a 21-7, 19-21, 15-5 win against Brazil’s Maria Luiza Sena de Paula Silva and Cristiele Schwatrzhaupt.

They then beat Latvia’s Varvara Brailko and Anete Namike 12-21, 21-18, 15-8 to move into the next round.

Álvarez Mendoza and Moreno Matveeva, who skipped the first and second round of play, came up with a 21-19, 21-14 win over Russia’s Anna Movchan and Elizaveta Ludkova in the third round.

Hungary’s Orsolya Orbán and Nikolett Tátrai and the US’s Maya Harvey and Megan Kraft had two straight-set victories apiece to advance to the main draw.

Orbán and Tátrai won their first match against Vanuatu’s Luduine Tebeim and Maybel Ravo 21-12, 21-10 before defeating Israel’s Noga Maor and Maya Ben Shlomo 21-16, 21-11.

Harvey and Kraft were pushed hard by Kazakhstan’s Kristina Zhuk and Dana Rubilko in their first match, but the American duo still managed to gain a 21-16, 23-21 win.

They dictated the tempo in their next match and registered a 21-15, 21-12 victory over New Zealand’s Brittany Allison-Carnie and Katie Sadlier.

Action in Nanjing is due to continue tomorrow.

It is the 15th edition of the International Volleyball Federation competition, which was held annually until 2014 but has since been organised every two years.
