Second seeds Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia crashed out of the mixed doubles event on the opening day of the Badminton World Federation Thailand Open in Bangkok.

The Malaysian duo, who won the event in 2016, were beaten 21-14, 21-19 by the unseeded Chinese Taipei pairing of Lu Ching Yao and Hu Ling Fang in a shock result at the Nimibutr Stadium.

Wang Chi-Lin and Lee Chia Hsin, also of Chinese Taipei, joined their compatriots in the second round as the third seeds overcame Tinn Isriyanet and Pacharapun Chochuwong of Thailand 21-18, 21-13.

Indonesian fifth seeds Praveen Jordan and Melati Oktavianti were among the other pairings to progress to the next phase of the mixed doubles competition.

Jordan and Oktavianti dispatched Takuro Hoki and Koharu Yonemoto of Japan 21-15, 21-15 in just 24 minutes to seal a comfortable passage to round two.

Top seeds Chris and Gabby Adcock of England are scheduled to face Andika Ramadiansyah and Mychelle Bandaso of Indonesia in their opening round clash tomorrow.

Mixed doubles was the only event where main draw action took place at the event in the Thai capital on day one today.

The women’s and men’s singles main draw both get underway when the tournament resumes tomorrow.

Ratchanok Intanon, world champion in 2013, begins the defence of her Thailand Open title when she plays Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

China's world number three Shi Yuqi is the top seed in the men's draw but his team-mate, reigning Olympic champion Chen Long, is seeded third and will also be a threat.
