Ireland have progressed through to the semi-finals of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's World Twenty20 qualifying tournament after an eight-wicket win over Uganda in The Netherlands today.

Victory in Amstelveen means Ireland have finished top of Group B with three wins out of three and will face Group A runners-up Papua New Guinea in their semi-final on Thursday (July 12).

Both finalists from the tournament will join Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and host West Indies at the ICC Women's World Twenty20, due to be held in Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana and St Lucia from November 9 to 24.

Ireland's Ciara Metcalfe took three wickets as Uganda were restricted to just 78 runs from their 20 overs.

It came after the start of today's play was delayed by half an hour due to persistent rain.

The Irish reached their target with 47 balls to spare with opener Clare Shillington top scoring with 27.

Today’s other match in Group B saw Scotland beat Thailand by 27 runs in Utrecht.

The Scots set Thailand a target of 98 before bowling their opponents all out for 70 after 17.2 overs.

It secured them second place ahead of Uganda. 

They will face Group A winners Bangladesh in the other semi-final.

Today's Group A action saw Bangladesh defeat the United Arab Emirates by eight wickets in Utrecht after reaching their target of just 40 with 79 balls remaining.

In Amstelveen, Papua New Guinea overcame hosts The Netherlands by 44 runs having bowled them all out for 85. 

The fifth-to-eighth-place play-off semi-final matches, also scheduled for Thursday, pit Uganda against The Netherlands and Thailand against the UAE.

The third, fifth and seventh-place play-offs are due to take place on Saturday (July 14) along with the final.
