Spain enjoyed knock-out success in the men's draw at the World University Beach Volleyball Championship in Munich.

First round matches featuring group runners-up were contested in the German city today to determine who joins the pool winners in round two of the competition.

Spanish pairings Alejandro Huerta Pastor and Javier Huerta Pastor and Óscar Jiménez Gutiérrez and Hugo Rojas Martínez both advanced to make it to the last 16.

The former, the eighth seeds, saw off Armenia's Razmik Hakobyan and Ashot Balabekyan 21-14, 21-11.

Gutiérrez and Martínez, seeded 16th, then defeated Jonathan Justice and Adam Wienckowski of the United States 22-20, 21-11.

There was also home success for Germany's Dan John and Eric Stadie who were 21-13, 21-14 winners over Dmytro Loitarenko and Serhii Stasenko of Ukraine.

In the women's draw, fifth seeds Nadine Strauss and Franziska Friedl of Austria needed a first round tie and they came through against Norway's Sunniva Helland-Hansen and Katinka Muri Krahn, 21-11, 21-17.

New Zealand's Alice Bain and Olivia MacDonald, seeded 13th, won from behind against France's 15th ranked Ophélie Lusson and Mia Guyot-Polverini, 17-21, 21-14, 15-13.

Switzerland's ninth seeds Zoe Verge-Depre and Esmee Böbner came through against Cypriot duo Manolina Konstantinou and Zoi Konstantopoulou, 19-21, 21-16, 15-9.

Competitors also had to battle rain delays during today's play.
