Senior competitions begun today at the European Canoe Marathon Championships ©ECA

Hungary, winners of six golds so far at the European Canoe Marathon Championships, put in another impressive performance on the first day of senior competition at Metković in Croatia, although they only had one gold medallist.

Hungary dominated the women’s K1 event as Renáta Csay won in 1 hour 58min 34.20sec, with her compatriot Zsofia Czellai-Voros taking second place, 01:06.23 behind.

Third place went to Britain’s Lizzie Broughton, who finished 1:50.58 behind Csay.

But while there were also two Hungarian medallists in the men’s K1 event, Portugal’s Jose Ramalho ensured they were silver and bronze as he won in 2:05:35.92.

Hungary’s Adrian Boros was second, just 13.38 seconds behind with compatriot Kriztian Mathe third, 14.15 adrift of the winner.

Manuel Campos of Spain won the men’s C1 race in 2:03:20.89, with Portugal’s Rui Lacerda finishing 40.61 seconds back in second.

Jakub Březina of the Czech Republic claimed third place, 2:10.33 behind the leader.

Ukraine’s Liudmyla Babak won the opening event of the day, the C1 women’s race, in a time of 1:22:50.38, with home paddler Vanesa Tot just 1:38.03 behind her.

The event is due to conclude tomorrow with the finals of the men’s C2 and K2, and the women’s K2.
