Defending champions England opened their Women's Euro Beach Soccer Cup campaign with a win as the tournament began in Nazaré in Portugal today.

England beat the Czech Republic 5-2 in the Group A encounter at the Estádio do Viveiro on Praia de Nazaré.

Sarah Kempson was the star performer for England as she bagged a brace in a confident performance from the reigning champions.

In the other match held today, Russia overcame Switzerland 8-6 in a Group B thriller.

Margret Matejkova got the Czech Republic off to the perfect start as she gave her side a shock lead 11 minutes into the clash with England.

Cathy James levelled for England in before Molly Clarke turned the match on its head by scoring her team's second barely 60 seconds later.

Kempson's first of the game put England two goals in front but Anata Jungova reduced the deficit shortly after.

Nadine Bazin seemingly put the match out of sight with England's fourth before Kempson's penalty rounded off the scoring late on.

Six teams are competing at the tournament in the Portuguese seaside resort.

Spain are the other team in Group A and are due to play England and the Czech Republic tomorrow.

Group B also features The Netherlands, who entertain Russia and Switzerland.

The top team in each group will progress to the final, scheduled to take place on Sunday (July 8).
