The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) Women in Sports Commission is inviting carers and people with a disability to a one-day workshop at the Fiji Disabled People’s Federation (FDPF) premises in Suva tomorrow.

The programme is funded by the International Olympic Committee.

Hosted in partnership with the Fiji Paralympic Committee and the FDPF, it will include a workshop on understanding impairment, disability and handicap.

There will also be workshops on the World Health Organization’s international classification of functioning, disability and health as well as on physical activity and sports.

A highlight of the programme is expected to be "Play a Sport", where participants will engage in sporting activity with the objective of introducing new sports to people with a disability.

FASANOC Women in Sports Commission chairperson Hamidan Bibi said that in delivering the "Sports and Working with Persons with Disability and Carers of Persons with Disabilities Programme", it is seeking to actively engage with carers and people with a disability in a safe and fun environment while participating in sports.

She said that this would lead to empowerment and exposure to other sports-related aspects and activities, including social and self-development for people with a disability.
