Reigning Olympic champion Chen Long exited the Badminton World Federation Indonesia Open in Jakarta at the first round stage on day one.

The Chinese fifth seed was sent crashing out in three sets to Brice Leverdez from France, the world number 22.

It finished 17-21, 22-20, 21-19 as the Rio 2016 gold medallist departed.

Another shock came in the mixed doubles as Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet, the third seeds, went out.

Their defeat to Thailand's Sapsiree Taerattanachai and Dechapol Puavaranukroh, which finished 21-19, 13-21, 21-15, was another suprise at the Super 1000 World Tour event at Istora Gelora Bung Karno.

The rest of the seeded teams to play today all made it through, with the home favourites and top seeds Tontowi Ahmad and Lilyana Natsir winning comfortably 21-11, 21-14 against Malaysians Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing.

As in the mixed doubles, Long was the only seeded men's singles player to lose today, although half the draw will start the campaign in Jakarta tomorrow.

Other notable results from the men's singles include Denmark's first seed and world champion Viktor Axelsen winning 21-10, 21-19 against Indonesia's Jonatan Christie and the third seed Shi Yuqi from China beating England's Rajiv Ouseph 16-21, 21-18, 21-18.

In the women's singles it was the bottom half of the draw that played today and all of the seeds in action made it safely through.

Second seed Akane Yamaguchi from Japan beat Thailand's Nitchaon Jindapol 21-15, 21-19.

Denmark's Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen, the second seeds, lost to Chinese Taipei's Liao Min Chun and Su Ching Heng in straight sets 21-13, 21-15.

The second seeds did make it through in the women's doubles in today's play though.

Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota eased past Indonesia's Della Destiara Haris and Rizki Amelia Pradipta 21-16, 21-18.

Tomorrow's play will see the first round finished off in each of the draws.

First on court will be the Indonesians Riky Widianto and Masita Mahmudin in the mixed doubles against Chinese Taipei's Wang Chi-Lin and Lee Chia Hsin.
