United States celebrated four gold medals at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships on a day when world records fell regularly in Calgary.

The men's under-105 kilogram competition saw a dramatic three minute spell, as new standards were set in the bench press discipline.

Bryce Lewis produced a world record lift of 225.5kg, with his fellow American Garrett Belvins then managing 226kg at the Rally Pointe Center.

The bar was raised further by Ireland's Barry Piggott, who lifted 226.5kg to head the standings in the discipline.

He would not feature on the final podium at the end of the competition, as Lewis secured the overall title by managing a total of 875.5kg across the events.

Blevins would take the silver on 871kg, with Poland’s Krzysztof Wierzbicki securing bronze on 862.5kg.

Ls McClain delivered further success for the US team in the men's under-93kg division, as he topped the standings with a total lift of 820kg.

Algeria's Amar Kanane finished as the runner-up on 812.5kg, which was partly aided by a world record squat of 330kg.

Brazil's David Coimbra won the bronze with 790kg.

A world record squat of 213kg helped Daniella Melo clinch victory in the women's under-84kg competition.

The American triumphed with a total world record of 571kg, with Belarus' Sniazhana Zubko and The Netherlands' Ielja Strik rounding off the podium by both managing 532.5kg.

A clean sweep of American gold medals on the day was completed by Bonica Brown, who managed world record lifts of 273kg in the squat and 151.5kg in the bench press.

It helped her clinch a comfortable victory in the overall competition, as she finished on 671.5kg

Her nearest challenger Theresa Simanu of New Zealand was some way adrift on 597.5kg, with Canada's Hailey Kostynuik earning bronze on 582.5kg.

Classic - or unequipped - competition will conclude tomorrow.

The Championships are run by the International Powerlifting Federation.
