International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons confirmed the event would form part of the qualification process for Tokyo 2020 during a visit to The Philippines.

Parsons was in attendance at an event held to officially launch the ASEAN Para Games in the country.

"We should be seeing more Asians in the Paralympics and as such, we will award points in the 10th ASEAN Para Games for the winners to improve their chances of qualifying in the 2020 Paralympics set in Japan," said the Brazilian, elected IPC President in September 2017, according to the Manila Standard.

Around 1,000 Para-athletes are expected to participate at the ASEAN Para Games, held after the conclusion of the Southeast Asian Games in The Philippines.

Athletics, swimming, boccia, table tennis, powerlifting, cycling, football, sitting volleyball and wheelchair events including basketball, tennis and fencing are among the sports on the ASEAN Para Games programme.

Philipine Paralympic Committee President Mike Barredo has targeted a top-four finish for the host country at the Games.

"In the last two editions of this event, we improved from seventh to fifth," he said. 

"Now that the event will be held here, we stand a good chance of improving on our performance anew. 

"We have not finalised the members yet since the events to be played were just finalised, but we are looking at around 200 local athletes in both the individual and team events."

Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia hosted last year's ASEAN Para Games, while Singapore staged the 2015 edition.
