The Indian world number eight claimed there was not time on his packed schedule to compete at the event, due to begin in Fullerton in California tomorrow.

The  U.S. Open is a Badminton World Federation Super 300 event and has a prize fund of $150,000 (£112,000/€127,000), significantly less than the Malaysia Open and Indonesia Open events, both scheduled to take place in the next month.

A total of $750,000 (£560,000/€636,000) is up for grabs in Malaysia, while the prize pit at the Indonesian event stands at $1.25 million (£934,000/€1.1 million).

The World Championships are also not far away as Basel in Switzerland hosts the sport's showpiece tournament outside of the Olympic Games in August.

Kumar is likely to compete in Basel before he heads back to Indonesia for a possible challenge for the Asian Games title at Jakarta Palembang 2018.

"There are so many tournaments lined up later this month," Kumar was quoted as saying by the Times of India. 

"There is no time for the  U.S. Open this year."

Kumar's compatriot Parupalli Kashyap, runner-up last year, has also decided to skip the  U.S. Open.

Two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan of China is the top seed for the men's singles event.

Beiwen Zhang will be hoping to deliver victory in front of her home crowd as the American is seeded top in the women's singles tournament.

The  U.S. Open at the Titan Gym on the campus of California State University begins with qualification tomorrow, with finals due to be held on Sunday (June 17).
