America's Dalton LaCoe was among the winners as junior competition began at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Calgary.

LaCoe triumphed in the junior under-53 kilogram event at the Rally Pointe Center in the Canadian city.

His victory was largely due to a 271.5kg deadlift, the first time a lifter had achieved five times their bodyweight in an International Powerlifting Federation event.

He ended the competition with a total of 559kg, comfortably taking the gold medal.

Canada’s John Pineda and Colombia’s Jesus David Gomez Iquierdo completed the podium.

They managed totals of 457.5kg and 440kg respectively.
