United States reclaimed the Curtis Cup by a record margin as they swept Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) in the singles matches on Scarsdale, New York.

The hosts began the day with a comfortable 9-3 lead, following two dominant days in the four-ball matches and foursomes.

It left them needing just one-and-a-half points from the eight available in the singles to clinch victory.

Sophia Schubert and Kristen Gillman, who have both been US Women’s amateur champions, claimed the points required by winning the first two singles matches.

Schubert overcame Olivia Mehaffey 2&1, before Gillman sealed victory by beating Annabell Fuller 5&4.

As well as clinching the key point, Gillman became only the third player to win all five of her matches in a single Curtis Cup.

Stacy Lewis is the only other American to have managed the feat having done so in 2008, while GB&I’s Bronte Law won all her matches in 2016.

The US would then close on the record winning margin of 14½-3½, when they triumphed back in 1982.

Jennifer Kupcho, Andrea Lee and Lauren Stephenson all claimed 2&1 wins over Lily May Humphreys, Alice Hewso and Shannon McWilliam.

There was also an impressive 5&4 success for Lucy Li over India Clyburn, while Lilia Vu ended two up against Sophie Lamb.

The singles clean sweep was sealed by Mariel Galdiano, as the American beat Paula Grant by one shot.

The US eventually ended as 17-3 winners, securing their 29th success in the 40 editions of the competition.

This biennial contest between female amateur golfers from the US and Britain and Ireland was first contested in 1932.

GB&I will host the next edition of the event in Wales during 2020.
