The two other golds on offer at the La Mirada Aquatic Center went to China's Jiang twins, Wenwen and Tingting, in the free duet, and Italy's Giorgio Minisini and Manila Flamini in the free mixed duet.

Yakhno, 20, profiting in the absence of Japanese rival Yukiko Inui, earned her first World Series gold in the solo free category.

Her story about fighting a big fire in a city scored her 91.337 points.

Canada's Jacqueline Simoneau took silver with 91.2000, in front of Japan’s Minami Kono, who scored 89.1667.

Kono was one of the swimmers affected by Japan's disqualification in the team free event yesterday, but did not dwell on the past.

"I changed my mindset and today, try to do my best," Kono said.

Yakhno now leaves North America with 16 medals - half from the previous World Series stop at Surrey, in Canada, and half from Los Angeles.

The FINA Series will continue in Syros Island, Greece from June 15 to 17 for the penultimate leg of the 10-city tour.

Ukraine won its fourth highlight gold in four World Series outings with its popular quickstep routine, featuring snippets of "Jump and Jive" and "It Don't Mean a Thing".

The performance earned 92.6333 points, with silver going to Japan with 89.3333.

Minisini, 22, and Flamini, 30, won their second gold medal in two days with a new free routine called "The Duel", by the Hungarian composer Havasi.

After they had scored 89.1667 points their coach, Rossella Pribiri, said: "We hope for a higher score, but I'm happy, I'm happy.

"There is some mistakes, but it’s a new routine."

Colombia’s Jhair Galeano and Ingrid Usuga took silver with their jungle-themed programme, 11.0667 points behind Italy.

In the free duet, the Jiang twins scored 92.4667 for a "Swan Lake" performance they have been honing since the 2017 FINA World Championships.

Ukraine, represented by Yakhno and Anastasiya Savchuk, took silver, scoring 91.8333.

Japan's Minami Kono and Yuriko Osawa claimed the bronze medal with a personal best 90.2000 points for their clock-themed routine.
