Jaisyn Mike and Ryan Stills both struck gold for the United States in the M1 masters category at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Calgary.

Mike triumphed in the over-120 kilograms division with a total haul of 923.5kg at the Rally Pointe Center in the Canadian city.

His compatriot Jamey Grotjahn took silver on 880kg, with bronze going to Canadian Josh Simpson, who lifted a total of 837.5kg.

Stills had earlier reigned supreme in the under-120kg category as his lifts combined for an overall weight of 850kg.

Finland's Antti Vihola was the recipient of the silver medal as he lifted 805kg, 3kg more than eventual bronze medallist Pavol Demcak of the Czech Republic.

Mexico's Gabriel Garcia denied the host nation home gold as he beat the Canadian duo of Brandon Summers and Jeff Butt in the under-93kg division.

Garcia and Summers both posted an overall total of 730kg but the Mexican was declared the winner by virtue of a lower bodyweight.

Butt did enough for bronze having lifted 695kg.

Classic - or unequipped - competition is taking  place until June 17 at the Rally Pointe Center.

Men's and women's events are part of the programme as well as junior and masters - veterans - competitions, which are the only ones to have begun so far.
