Russia continued their dominant performance at the United World Wrestling Under-23 European Championships as they claimed three gold medals on the opening day of men's freestyle finals in Istanbul.

Having won the women's team title yesterday, Russia maintained their strong showing as Ibragim Ilyasov, Nachyn Kuular and Radik Valiev all topped the podium in their respective events.

Ilyasov began the Russian charge when he defeated Azerbaijan's Afgan Khashalov of Azerbaijan 10-4 in the under 57 kilograms division.

Taras Markovych of the Ukraine and Greece's Georgios Pilidis each took bronze.

Kuular then made it two wins from two for the Russian squad as he thrashed Azerbaijan's Anvarbek Dalgatov 11-0 in the gold medal bout at under 65kg.

Andrii Svyrd of Ukraine and Ilman Mukhtarov of France were the recipients of the bronze medals.

Russia's success was briefly halted by Ukraine's Oleksii Boruta, who dispatched Enes Uslu of Turkey 4-0 to secure gold in the under 70kg category.

Bronze medals were claimed by Giorgi Sulava of Georgia and Armenia's Gevorg Mkheyan.

Normal service resumed for the Russian team in the next final held today as Valiev edged Frenchman Johnny Just Bur 6-3 to win the under 79kg crown, while Azerbaijan's Murad Suleymanov and Nika Kentchadze of Georgia earned bronze medals.

Belarus' Dzianis Khramiankou was crowned 97kg under-23 European champion after Russia's Rasul Magomedovitch suffered an injury in the final.

Erik Thiele of Germany and Georgia's Givi Matcharashvili both claimed bronze.

The event in Istanbul is due to conclude tomorrow.
