The English player began the day at the top of Group B in the women's event and knew a victory over France's Camille Serme would secure her spot in the semi-finals.

Serme would prove dominant throughout the encounter to book her place in the last four for the second consecutive year.

She emerged as a 11-7, 11-5 winner, leaving Massaro fearing for her semi-final spot.

Massaro knew she could be eliminated on percentage of games won should Egypt's Raneem El Welily overcome England's Sarah-Jane Perry.

The world champion would achieve the feat by beating Perry 11-6, 11-9, which ensured she topped the group.

Serme progressed in second place, with Massaro and Perry suffering elimination.

The semi-final line-up was confirmed when Egypt's Nour El Tayeb overcame New Zealand's Joelle King in a dramatic Group A match.

The match went to a deciding game, with both players having match balls at one stage, but El Tayeb would seal victory by a 7-11, 11-7, 13-11 score.

She progressed with Nour El Sherbini, with the Egyptian having already sealed her spot in the last four after two wins.

El Tayeb will face El Welily in an all-Egyptian semi-final, with Serme meeting El Sherbini.

Men's second seed Ali Farag booked his place in the semi-finals, following a decisive victory in Group B against compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad.

Both players had a chance to progress, but Farag dominated proceedings to triumph 11-5, 11-5.

He finished second in the group, with Germany’s Simon Rosner having sealed a third straight win by beating France's Grégory Gaultier 11-8, 12-10.

England's Nick Matthew continued his swansong before retirement by beating Egypt's Mohamed Elshorbagy 11-6, 11-6 in Group A to top the standings.

Both had already secured semi-final places.

Colombia’s Miguel Ángel Rodríguez and Egypt’s Tarek Momen hoped to end their participation on a high when they played each other.

The latter would emerge as an 11-5, 8-11, 11-8 winner.

Matthew will face Farag in the semi-finals, with Elshorbagy set to meet Rosner.
