Hosts Mexico enjoyed huge victories in both the men's and women's competitions as the inaugural event of the new Hockey Series began in Salamanca.

Teams who have not qualified for the International Hockey Federation's new top-tier Hockey Pro League will contest Hockey Series events across the world, which are the first stage of qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The event at the Cancha de Hockey Siglo XXI features Pan American teams playing in round-robin competitions.

Mexico's women began in style, crushing Guatemala 30-0 on day one today.

In the other women's game held, Puerto Rico defeated Panama 8-0.

The men's event saw another rout for Mexico as they won 18-0 against Costa Rica.

Puerto Rico and Panama met again with the same side winning - but this time it was 4-0.

Countries taking part in this season's events have the chance to qualify for the Hockey Series Finals.

These in turn will offer places at Tokyo 2020 qualification tournaments.

Action is due to continue in Mexico tomorrow.

United States will play Costa Rica in the men's tournament with Mexico hosting Panama.

In the women's event, Canada will play Guatemala with Mexico and Panama meeting again.
