Denmark’s Annika Langvad prevailed in the women’s elite cross-country short circuit event as action begun today at the International Cycling Union Mountain Bike World Cup in Nové Město in Czech Republic.

Langvad, the winner of the World Cup opener in Stellenbosch in South Africa, clocked a winning time of 25min 42sec to beat France’s Pauline Ferrand-Prévot by a slender margin of one second at a circuit around the Nové Město Stadium.

Switzerland’s Jolanda Neff, who enjoyed a win at last week's event in Albstadt in Germany, completed the top three in 25:49.00.

Norway's Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa finished just short of a podium place in fourth.

The men’s elite cross-country short circuit event saw New Zealand’s Samuel Gaze triumph in 24:55.00.

The Netherlands’ Mathieu Van der Poel finished one second behind in the runners-up spot, while Switzerland’s Nino Schurter, the reigning Olympic and world champion, was a further second back in third.

Van der Poel now leads the overall standings with 535 points, followed by Schurter with 530 and then Gaze with 475.

Under-23 cross-country races for men and women are scheduled for tomorrow.
