British track star Hannah Cockroft claimed two victories on the opening day of competition at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Nottwil, winning the women’s 200 metres and 800m T34 events at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre.

The world champion firstly won the 200m with a time of 30.64sec as The Netherlands' Amy Siemons finished second in 34.67 and Belgium’s Joyce Lefevre came third in 36.45.

Later in the day, she left the rest of the field in her wake to seal victory over 800m in 1:59.60 on a day when temperatures climbed to 27 degrees Celsius.

Fellow Briton Paige Murray finished second in 2:39.28, while Japan’s Haruka Kitaura came third in 2:44.00.

"It was hard work," Cockroft said after finishing the 800m.

"I think I maybe overcooked it on the first 400m, went a little bit faster than I should have.

"It’s really hot out here and I’m not used to that, so I’m not really happy with the time.

"But to be going consistently under two minutes now is something good so I’ll take that positive away from it.

"I’m definitely getting stronger doing the 800m and I‘m definitely getting better at it and learning more from it."

Among the other world champions tasting victory today was Tunisia’s Yassine Gharbi, who looked formidable as he finished fastest out of all the men’s 200m T54 heats.

The 28-year-old, who broke the 400m T54 world record in Dubai earlier this year, raced round the bend with Dutchman Kenny van Weeghel and Finland’s Leo-Pekka Tahti also in contention, but Gharbi’s strength couldn’t be matched as he pulled clear to take the win in 24.35.

Gharbi, the 200m and 400m T54 gold medallist at last year’s World Championships in London, finished 0.07 seconds ahead of nearest challenger Van Weeghel.

Great Britain’s Richard Chiassaro was a further 0.1 seconds back in third.

There were also wins today for Australia’s Madison de Rozario and Belgium’s Peter Genyn.

De Rozario, who has already won two Commonwealth Games titles as well as the London Marathon this year, came out on top in the women’s 800m T53 event in 1:49.76.

Turkey’s Hamide Kurt finished second in 1:51.40, while Canada’s Jessica Frotten came third in 1:52.67.

Genyn, meanwhile, looked in terrific form as he saw off his rivals in the men’s 200m T51 in 36.83.

The Paralympic and world champion, who broke a world record in Nottwil last year, was quickly away at the gun and never appeared under threat as he powered home to the win ahead of rival Toni Piispanen of Finland.

Piispanen crossed the line in 38.34, while third-placed Stephen Osborne of Britain clocked 41.04.

In the men’s 800m T53 event, multiple world champion Brent Lakatos of Canada finished strongly to take the win in a world best time of 1:37.21.

Paralympic champion Pongsakorn Paeyo of Thailand finished second in 1:37.74, while Tunisia’s Walid Ktila came third in 1:38.10.

Out in the field, Poland’s Tomasz Paulinski impressed in the men’s discus F35 with a throw of 40.19m.

Team-mate Dorota Szmula managed a mark of 10.91m in the women’s javelin F33.

Luxembourg’s Tom Habscheid registered 44.51m in the men’s discus F63, while The Netherlands' Lara Baars achieved a winning throw of 6.90m in the women’s shot put F40.

Paralympic bronze medallist Mauricio Valencia of Colombia continued his recent run of form as he got the better of Morocco’s Paralympic champion Azeddine Nouiri in the men’s shot put F34.

Valencia posted 10.76m, while Nouiri managed 9.70m.

Colombia’s Diego Fernando Meneses Medina rounded out the podium with 9.68m.
