Swedish duo Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergstrom secured the men's crown with a day to go after recording an unassailable points tally on the penultimate day of racing at the European 470 Championships in the Bulgarian resort Bourgas.

Dahlberg and Bergstrom secured finishes of sixth and second today to give themselves a total of 37 points.

Their closest challengers, Panagiots Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis of Greece, could only record finishes of 10th and seventh, giving them a total of 56, which means they are unable to match the Swedish pair's total.

United States pairing Stuart McNay and David Hughes finished the day in third on a points total of 63.

If the US team finish on the podium, they will not be able to claim a medal as it is a European competition.

Their medal would instead go to the team ranked below them, which is currently French pairing Hippolyte Machetti and Sidoines Dantes on 71 points.

The women's competition is a lot tighter with Slovenians Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol currently top of the standings on 54 after finishes of fourth and 13th today.

Israel's Gil Cohen and Noa Lasry are currently second on 67 with German duo Frederike Loewe and Anna Markfort just one point further back in third.

The medal races in both events will take place tomorrow.

It was confirmed last week that neither the men's nor women's 470 categories will feature as standalone events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

It is possible, however, that they will still form part of one new mixed team event, the exact composition of which is not due to be confirmed until November.
