Turkey recently celebrated Olympic Day ©TOC

The Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC), in cooperation with the German Olympic Sport Confederation (DOSB), celebrated Olympic Day in the city of Gaziantep.

Under the banner of "Move, learn, discover", 500 sports fans gathered in the city to take part in sports including basketball, archery, darts, cycling, bowling and climbing.

The fans were joined by several professional athletes at the event including basketball player Nevriye Yılmaz, wrestler Fatih Cengiz, taekwondo player Sibel Güngör, karate competitor Eren Akkurt and weightlifters Yücel Sezer and Halit Can Baskaya.

İlke Özyüksel, who is the first ever Olympic modern pentathlon participant from Turkey, was also in attendance. 

Three-hundred-and-fifty Syrian refugee children also attended the event.

At the end of the day, all the participants were awarded a certificate signed by IOC President Thomas Bach and TOC President Uğur Erdener, who is also IOC vice-president.

TOC board member Seyit Bilal Porsun said: "“We are proud to host this wonderful event in such a beautiful city like Gaziantep, which has a young population who are eager to practice sports.

“The TOC is constantly implementing projects throughout Turkey aimed at promoting sports and the Olympic values amongst young people.

"We want sports to play a central role in the development of our country’s youth and Olympic Day is an excellent tool for achieving our objective."
