English qualifier Robert Milkins recorded a surprise victory at the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible by beating former champion Neil Robertson.

Home player Milkins held a surprise 6-3 lead overnight but 36-year-old Australian Robertson looked like he was returning to form after he reduced the deficit to 6-5.

Milkins, however, then won four consecutive frames to book his place in the next round with a 10-5 win.

He will now face two-time tournament champion Mark Williams after he beat Jimmy Robertson.

Williams came into today’s session 7-2 up after a convincing performance at the table yesterday, but England’s Robertson looked like he could cause an upset by winning the first two frames of today’s session to make it 7-4.

The Welshman, however, managed to shift the momentum back in his favour with a tournament-high break of 140 and eventually won by a 10-5 scoreline.

Following his win, Williams, who won the competition in 2000 and 2003, told BBC Sport: "I am coming into the Crucible playing the best stuff I have played for many years.

“Who knows if I can win it, but I have as good a chance as anyone.”

Another result today saw four-time champion John Higgins of Scotland record a 10-7 victory over 2010 Asian Games bronze medallist Thepchaiya Un-Nooh of Thailand.

The two incomplete matches from today which will carry on tomorrow saw England's world number four Judd Trump take a 6-3 lead against compatriot Chris Wakelin whilst Ryan Day of Wales also leads Anthony McGill of Scotland by a 6-3 scoreline.
