Egypt’s top seeds in the men’s and women’s tournaments at the El Gouna International Squash Open, Mohamed ElShorbagy and Nour El Sherbini, moved through to the quarter-finals.

This Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Series event,  taking place partly in the Squash Centre and partly in the outdoor glass court on the banks of the Red Sea, saw the men’s number one beat fellow Egyptian Omar Mosaad 11-13, 11-8,  11-5, 11-7 in just over ah hour.

He is now due to meet Germany’s Simon Rösner, who had an 11-1, 13-11, 11-0 win over England’s Declan James.

Victory would earn ElShorbagy a semi-final meeting with the winner of the match between his younger brother Marwan, who beat France’s Mathieu Castagnet 11-7, 11-13, 11-3, 11-8, and another Egyptian, fifth seed Karim Abdel Gawad, who earned an 11-1, 7-11, 13-11, 11-8 win over Lucas Serme of France.

France’s second seed Gregory Gaultier is scheduled to play his second round match against qualifier Chris Simpson of England today.

El Sherbini, winner of the World Championships title at this venue last year, is targeting another victory in the first ever women’s championship.

She won a gruelling match against US player Amanda Sobhy 11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6.

El Sherbini is now set to play France’s sixth seed Camille Serme, who earned an 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 win over Victoria Lust of England.

India’s top woman player Joshna Chinappa earned her first win over Malaysia’s former world number one Nicol David 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 in her second round match.

She is now due to meet England’s Laura Massaro, who beat Hong Kong’s Joey Chan 11-8, 11-4, 11-9.

Home second seed Raneem El Welily is scheduled to meet England’s Sarah-Jane Perry in her second round tomorrow
