Chan said he had fulfilled his "dreams and aspirations" after he was part of the Canadian squad which won the gold medal in the team event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February.

The announcement was widely expected as Chan had previously hinted he would call time on his career after the Games.

The Canadian star claimed three consecutive singles titles at the World Championships between 2011 and 2013.

Chan then finished with the silver medal behind Japanese sensation Yuzuru Hanyu at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, where he was also second in the team competition.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to skate for Canada," said Chan.

"It has given me memorable experiences and has taught me lessons I will carry throughout life. 

"I have fulfilled my dreams and aspirations in competitive skating and it is now time to move on to new challenges and opportunities. 

"I hope to have inspired many young skaters that with hard work, perseverance and dedication anything is possible."

Chan dominated the Canadian Championships, with 2015 the only edition of the event where he failed to win singles gold since 2008.

He also clinched three Four Continents Championships titles in 2009, 2012 and 2016.

"It has truly been an honour to have Patrick on our team and he will be greatly missed by the entire skating community," Skate Canada chief executive Debra Armstrong said.

"His beautiful lyrical skating matched with his outgoing and positive personality has made him a champion on and off the ice. 

"Patrick has left a tremendous mark on Canadian skating and we thank him for inspiring Canadians to embrace the joy of skating.

"Skate Canada would like to congratulate Patrick on a fabulous career and we wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.”
