Samantha Kerr scored four minutes from time in Australia’s final group match in the Asian Football Confederation Women’s Asian Cup in Jordan to earn a 1-1 draw with defending champions Japan.

The result at the Amman International Stadium meant that Australia finished top of Group B on goal difference and thus earned a semi-final meeting with Thailand, while Japan will now meet China, winners of Group A.

Both semi-finals are due take place on Tuesday (April 17) in Amman.

Japan had taken the lead through Mizuho Sakaguchi in the 63rd minute.

Australia’s 8-0 win over Vietnam in the previous match proved influential as they finished with a goal difference of eight, twice that of Japan.

In the day’s other match at the King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman, South Korean finished their Group A campaign strongly with a 4-0 win over Vietnam, finishing level with Australia and Japan on five points, but third on head-to-head results.

South Korea will play the Philippines for fifth place on Monday (April 16).
