Olympic champion Kyle Snyder sealed victory for hosts United States as they beat Azerbaijan in the final of the United World Wrestling (UWW) Men's Freestyle World Cup in Iowa City today.

With the US leading 5-3 in the gold medal match, Snyder claimed an emphatic 14-3 win over Roman Bakirov at 97 kilograms.

It secured his country’s 14th Freestyle World Cup title but first since 2003.

"It was another opportunity to seal it up for the United States," Snyder, who clinched the world men’s freestyle team title for the US last August, said.

"I would always pick myself to go out there and wrestle when it comes down to a team win.

"We have a lot of good guys, but I feel real confident in my ability to wrestle under those kinds of circumstances."

The US won two of the first three matches at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena, highlighted by 2016 world champion Logan Stieber beating three-time world champion Haji Aliyev 6-3 at 65kg.

Joshgun Azimov picked up a win for Azerbaijan at 70kg, edging multiple world bronze medallist James Green 4-4 on criteria.

it was Jordan Burroughs, the London 2012 Olympic gold medallist and four-time world champion, who helped ignite a string of three consecutive wins for the Americans.

Burroughs, whose record in World Cup competition is now 27-0, earned a second-period fall over under-23 European champion Gadzhimurad Omarov at 74kg.

Kyle Dake followed up with a 5-3 win over Olympic bronze medallist Jabrayil Hasanov to put the US 4-2 up after six matches.

David Taylor then gave the Americans their fifth victory by beating Aleksandr Gostiyev 12-2 at 86kg.

World bronze medallist Aslanbek Alborov kept Azerbaijan's hopes alive by edging another world bronze medallist, J'den Cox, 4-4 on criteria at 92kg.

Those hopes were dashed though by Snyder as he eased to victory over Bakirov.

"This is a great team and they performed really well this weekend," US freestyle coach Bill Zadick said.

"It was really exciting to win a heated finals match against a very good team from Azerbaijan."

Azerbaijan won the final match with Jamaladdin Magomedov using a late takedown to defeat world bronze medallist Nick Gwiazdowski 4-3 at 125kg.

Japan captured the bronze medal by defeating Cuba 6-4.

Georgia beat Mongolia 6-4 in the fifth-place play-off and Kazakhstan overcame India 10-0 in the seventh-place play-off.

The US and Azerbaijan met in the final after topping their respective pools.

Earlier today, they both made it three wins out of three.

The US beat Georgia 8-2 in Pool A, while Azerbaijan defeated Mongolia 7-3 in Pool B.

The other match in Pool A saw Japan overcome India 9-1.

Kazakhstan and Cuba finished level at 5-5 in Pool B.
