Canada, Scotland and Sweden are locked in a three-way tie for top spot on the standings after the fifth day of matches at the World Men's Curling Championships in Las Vegas.

Defending champions Canada joined the two European nations on the same seven win and one loss record after they beat The Netherlands 8-5 in the evening session at the Orleans Arena.

Scotland also impressed as they thrashed Japan 9-2.

Olympic silver medallists Sweden, beaten in the final by the United States at March's Winter Games in Pyeongchang, overcame Italy 9-4 in the morning session in the American city.

In the same session, Canada dispatched Norway 8-2, while Scotland maintained their superb start to the tournament with a 7-2 win over South Korea.

Norway and Russia remain the two closest teams to the runaway trio.

The Russian side picked up their fourth consecutive victory when they beat Olympic champions the US 7-6 in a tense affair.

Russia then suffered defeat by the same scoreline to Switzerland, briefly halting their charge towards a play-off spot.

"We had a tough game last night and we've had a couple of tough games earlier too that we won," Sweden skip Niklas Edin said.

"I think last night’s loss might even be positive for us for the rest of this event.

"You almost never go through these events undefeated.

"We bounced back really hard this morning and made a really good game here.

"We’re just trying to be more precise with rock placement and trying to figure out the speed of the rocks and the speed of the paths that we’re throwing in."

The competition in Las Vegas continues tomorrow.
