The International Judo Federation (IJF) World Judo Tour has arrived in the Georgian capital Tbilsi, which will host the first of two back-to-back Grand Prix events before the launch of the Olympic qualification period in May.

This weekend's event in Tbilisi will see 302 judoka from 38 nations descend on the New Sports Palace for the third Grand Prix of the season, following competitions in Tunis and Agadir.

With the qualification phase for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games set to begin in May, this event in Georgia gives experienced athletes a chance to get in some competitive practice whilst young judokas will be looking to put their names in the 2020 hat.

Host nation Georgia have picked a 39-strong team of 28 men and 11 women for this Grand Prix event.

The headline name on their roster is Rio 2016 bronze medallist Lasha Shavdatuashvili, who will compete in the men's under-73 kilogram category.

World Judo Masters winner Guram Tushishvili, who is making his Grand Prix debut, is also a name to look out for in the men's over-100kg competition.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Portugal's Jorge Fonseca, who competed at Rio 2016, is highly-fancied in the men’s under-100kg whilst former world champion and Olympic silver medallist Asley Gonzalez of Cuba will appear on the tour for the first time since the 2017 World Championship and is targeting his first title since winning the Havana Grand Prix in 2016.

In the women’s competition, Brazil’s London 2012 Olympic champion Sarah Menezes will be hoping to claim the under-48kg title whilst France’s world champion Clarisse Agbegnenou, a seven-time Grand Prix winner, will be the favourite in the women’s under-63kg competition.

Each of the three days will see preliminary rounds take place in the morning before a final block later in the afternoon, with competition starting tomorrow.
