German ice hockey player Christian Ehrhoff has announced his retirement after winning a silver medal at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics last month.

The 35-year-old defenceman was part of his country's squad which made a shock run to the Olympic final in South Korea.

They eventually lost a thrilling gold medal match 4-3 after overtime to the neutral Olympic Athletes of Russia team but claimed upset wins over Sweden and Canada before then.

Ehrhoff last represented German club side Kolner Haie and appeared in the National Hockey League for San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks.

According to Buffalo News, he will remain on the Sabres payroll until 2027-2028.

"After 19 years of pro hockey I've decided to call it a career," said Ehrhoff.

"Thanks to all my teams, team-mates, coaches, staff members and fans for your support and countless amazing memories.

"The decision is well thought.

"After so many years at the highest level the time has come for me to start something new."

Ehrhoff played 118 times for Germany at four Winter Olympics, seven World Championships and two World Cup of Hockey tournaments.

The alternate captain was also his country's flagbearer at the Pyeongchang 2018 Closing Ceremony.

"Christian and all German ice hockey can look back with pride at an extraordinary career," said German head coach Marco Sturm.

"He always presented himself on and off the ice as a leader and belongs to the best players German hockey has ever produced.

"I wish him all the best in his private and professional life for his new era."
