Former Zimbabwean cricket official Rajan Nayer has been suspended from the game for 20 years after admitting trying to influence the test series between Zimbabwe and the West Indies last year.

Nayer, the treasurer and marketing director of the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association, was charged after offering Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer $30,000 (£21,200/€24,300) to fix the result of the series.

Cremer informed Zimbabwe head coach Heath Streak of the approach and the matter was subsequently referred to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Nayer accepted a charge of breaching the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code.

The test series between Zimbabwe and the West Indies was played over two matches at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

After the West Indies won the first test by 117 runs, they confirmed their overall 1-0 series victory with a draw in the second test.

Zimbabwe's Hamilton Masakadza was the top run scorer that tournament with 251 runs to his name.

The honour of player of the series, however, went to West Indies spin bowler Devendra Bishoo, who took 13 wickets over the two matches.

Zimbabwe recently hosted the qualifying tournament for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, which will be held in England and Wales, with Afghanistan and the West Indies securing their spots thanks to finishing first and second respectively.

This news regarding Nayer’s ban comes in the wake of the Australian ball-tampering scandal, which has seen Australian captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner suspended for 12 months by Cricket Australia.

Cameron Bancroft, who carried out the cheating, has been suspended for nine months.
