Japanese judoka won three gold medals on the opening day of the International Judo Federation Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg today.

World under-66 kilograms champion Hifumi Abe led the way by continuing a three-year unbeaten streak to 32 consecutive contests.

The 20-year-old beat Yakub Shamilov of hosts Russia in the final to claim victory at the Palace of Sport.

Abdula Abdulzhalilov of Russia and Belarus' Dzmitry Minkou shared bronze.

Hiromi Endo returned to form to win gold in the women's under-48kg event.

The two-time Asian Championships winner stunned Argentina's Olympic champion Paula Pareto after she received a third shido in the closing seconds.

Mongolia's Narantsetseg Ganbaatar shared bronze with Katharina Menz of Germany.

Endo is now locked in a three-horse race with world champion Funa Tonaki and Olympic bronze medallist Ami Kondo for Japanese team selection for major competitions later this year.

Aimi Nouchi gained the third Japanese success in the under-63kg event.

She beat Juul Franssen of The Netherlands in the final after Italy's Edwige Gwend and France's Maelle Di Cintio had each taken bronze.

Natalia Kuziutina claimed the only Russian gold of the day in the under-52kg category on home mats.

She beat Brazil's Erika Miranda of Brazil in the final as Japan's Rina Tatsukawa shared bronze with another Brazilian in Jessica Pereira.

Portugal's three-time world silver medallist Telma Monteiro triumphed in the under-57kg competition after beating Chinese Taipei's Lien Chen-ling.

Sumiya Dorjsuren claimed another Mongolian medal after sharing bronze with Momo Tamaoki of Japan.

Other men's winners today were Kazakhstan's Yeldos Smetov in the under-60kg division and Tsogtbaatar of Mongolia at under-73kg.

Smetov defeated Russia's Islam Yashuev in the final as another host nation fighter in Beslan Mudranov shared bronze with Japan's Yuma Oshima.

Tsend-Ochir beat Armenia's Ferdinand Karapetian in the final as Italy's Olympic champion Fabio Basile had to settle for bronze alongside Uali Kurzhev of Russia.
