Italy celebrated success on the opening day of the World University Shooting Championship in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Women’s trap competitions provided the focus at the Subang International Shooting Range.

Valeria Raffaelli, Fiammatta Rossi and Ariana Matassa combined to impressive effect in the team final.

The trio achieved a total score of 201 points in the three rounds of the competition, led by Raffaelli’s score of 70.

It saw the Italian team comfortably triumph in the final, with Russia ending a distant second place with a score of 185 points.

The podium was rounded off by India, whose shooters finished two points behind Russia on 183.

A second Italian gold was unsurprisingly achieved in the individual event, with Rossi triumphing in the final.

She hit 40 of the 50 targets to clinch the title, with her team-mate Raffaelli ending one point behind to take the silver.

Russia’s Ekaterina Subbotina claimed the bronze medal, having been eliminated in third place in the final.

She hit 32 of her 40 targets.

Italy appear on course for further success in the men’s team event, with two of the five rounds having been contested.

They have 144 points, with Slovakia and India following on 141 and 138 respectively,

The men’s team event and individual competition are both due to conclude tomorrow.

It is the seventh edition of the International University Sport Federation event.
