New Zealand have named their men's hockey team for next month's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast as they seek to improve on their fourth-place finish at Glasgow 2014.

The squad features Shea McAleese, set to make his fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games appearance following Melbourne 2006, Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014.

Veteran midfielder Arun Panchia, who has played 233 tests for the country, is among the other notable figures on their team.

Strikers Hugo Inglis and Stephen Jenness are also lining up for their third straight Games and will be looking to add another medal to the bronze won in New Delhi in 2010, the last time the country finished on the men's hockey podium.

Aidan Sarikaya, one of five players aged 23 or under, has played just 10 tests for New Zealand and is among the relative newcomers on the squad.

The announcement comes after the New Zealand Olympic Committee and Hockey New Zealand named the women's team earlier this week.

"We’re really looking forward to the challenge of the Commonwealth Games and we know we will go up against some very good sides," head coach Darren Smith said.

"The majority of the team for Gold Coast played during this year’s Four Nations series in Tauranga and Hamilton so it will be great so continue that progression as a unit.

"It’s great to have Cory Bennett back after several months out with injury - he’s been training very strongly and will add a lot in the defensive line."

New Zealand have been drawn to face rivals Australia, Canada, South Africa and Scotland in Pool A of the men's tournament.

Group B features England, India, Malaysia, Pakistan and Wales, with competition due to run from April 5 until the finals on the day of the Closing Ceremony.
