Caroline Wozniacki's pursuit of the world number one ranking was put on hold as she was beaten in straight sets by Russia's Daria Kasatkina at the Indian Wells Masters in California.

Kasatkina, ranked 19th in the world, claimed an impressive 6-4, 7-5 win to progress to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Dane could have reclaimed top spot by winning the tournament but her run was ended at the fourth round stage by a determined Kasatkina.

Angelique Kerber of Germany awaits for the Russian after she beat Caroline Garcia of France 6-1, 6-1 in this Women's Tennis Association Premier Mandatory tournament.

Romania's Simona Halep, who will remain the world number one after the conclusion of the event, booked her place in the last eight with a 7-5 6-1 victory over China's Wang Qiang.

Petra Martić of Croatia will take on Halep for a spot in the semi-finals as she overcame Markéta Vondroušová of Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6.

American Venus Williams, who beat sister Serena in the previous round, continued her progression at the tournament as she defeated Latvian Anastasija Sevastova 7-6, 6-4.

There was also a surprise in the men's event as third seed Marin Cilic of Croatia, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France will be Kohlschreiber's opponent after his compatriot Gaël Monfils was forced to withdraw from their encounter through injury.

Elsehwere, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro beat Spaniard David Ferrer 6-4, 7-6 to set up a meeting with team-mate Leonardo Mayer in a tournament that is a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event
